First Term Project
My Bear
Covers: Units 1-3
Objectives:
- Make an art Project: My Bear
- Follow directions
- Talk about the Project
- Review names of toys and body parts
Project Language:
This is my bear. Look! It`s a toy. It`s a bear. Let`s play a game.
Materials:
Brown paper lunch bags, black markers, glue, googly eyes, black buttons and ribbons.
STEPS IN A PROJECT
1) Fold the paper bag
Teacher: Fold the flap of the paper bag forward and fold the two square edges of the flap back and under to form a bear`s head. Cut out two ears and two paws from brown paper.
Children: Fold the flap of the paper bag forward and fold the two square edges of the flap back and under to form a bear`s head.
2) Add ears and claws
Teacher: Show children how to use a marker to draw black circles in the center of the bear`s ears and line for claws on the bear`s paws. Have them paste these to the bear`s head and body.
Children: Draw black circles in the center of the bear`s ears and lines for the claws on the bear`s paws. Paste the ears to the bear`s head and the paws to the sides of the bear`s body.
3) Finish the Bear
Teacher: Have the children draw a smiley mouth on the overturned flap. Use the ribbon to make a bow tie for the bear. Show children how to complete the bear by pasting on googly eyes, a button nose, and a bow tie just under the flap. Say: This is my bear. REPEAT.
Children: Draw a smiley mouth. Paste on the googly eyes, button nose, and bow tie. This is my bear.
SHOW AND TALK
1) Put your hand inside the paper bag bear and hold it up in front of a child and say: Look! It`s a toy. It`s a bear. Let`s play a game.
Invite children to form pairs and do the same with their bears. Ask children to invent games for the bears to play, such as hide and seek.
2) Have children draw pictures of other toys they like and show them to a partner. Model the following dialogue for them:
A: Look at my toy!
B: What is it?
A: It`s a (train).
EXTEND THE PROJECT
You may want to help children make other paper bag animals such as dogs, cats, mice, lions, rabbits, etc. Work with them to invent games and dialogues in which the children and animals can interact.
HOME-SCHOOL CONNECTION
Encourage children to take their finished project home. Ask them to show their family their projects and to use English to talk about them.
